First edition, inscribed by the author to Léon Say. American economist and statistician, professor at MIT and later at Yale, Francis Amasa Walker (1840–1897) was one of the leading figures in nineteenth-century American economic thought. His treatise Money (New York, Henry Holt, 1878) ranks among the earliest major American works devoted entirely to monetary theory. It reflects the debates of the period over the gold standard, bimetallism (the “free silver movement”), and the monetary reform of 1873. Walker examines the mechanisms of money, internal monetary dynamics (bank notes, coinage, etc.), and issues specific to the contemporary U.S. economy. “Unquestionably the most prominent and best known of American [economic] writers” (F.W.
