Money (Inscribed by the author to Léon Say)

First edition, inscribed by the author to Léon Say. Francis Amasa Walker (1840–1897), American economist and statistician, professor at MIT then Yale, was one of the major figures of nineteenth-century American economic thought. This treatise Money (New York, Henry Holt, 1878) counts among the earliest substantial American works devoted to monetary theory. It reflects the contemporary debates on the gold standard, bimetallism (the “free silver” movement), and the monetary reform of 1873. Walker analyses the mechanisms of money and the functioning of the U.S. monetary system, from bank notes to coinage. “Unquestionably the most prominent and best known of American [economic] writers” (F. W. Tausig, in Dictionary of American Biography, X:343-44; New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, 1987, vol. 4, p. 850). Copy with the author’s presentation inscription, “With the homage of the Author,” intended for Léon Say, whose engraved bookplate appears on the verso of the front free endpaper. An economist and statesman, former Minister of Finance and President of the Senate, Léon Say (1826–1896) belonged to the eminent liberal dynasty founded by his grandfather Jean-Baptiste Say.
